At Coach House Dental, we provide regular mouth cancer screenings for all our patients. If you have a history of mouth cancer in your family, let your dentist know right away. We may schedule screenings more often than for the average patient.

What is the screening process?

When our dentists conduct a mouth cancer screening, we look at signs of discolouration or sores inside the mouth.

We then feel around the mouth tissue for signs of abnormal growths or lumps. If we find anything unusual, we will refer you to a specialist for further examination.

Am I at risk of mouth cancer?

These are some risk factors that can increase your chances of getting mouth cancer:

• Old age (people over 40 are more at risk)
• Regular smoking or tobacco use
• Heavy consumption of alcohol
• Human papillomavirus (HPV)
• Male (men are more susceptible than women)
• Having an unhealthy diet
• Overexposure to harmful UVA rays

Even if you don’t have any of these risk factors, there is a growing number of people who are diagnosed with mouth cancer despite having no risk factors at all.

For this reason, mouth cancer screenings are vital in monitoring your overall health.

What are the symptoms of mouth cancer?

When our dentists conduct a mouth cancer screening, we look for symptoms inside your mouth, such as:

• Red and/or white patches
• Open wounds that don’t heal or bleed non-stop
• Any hard lumps or spots
• Signs of numbness or discomfort when you bite down on your teeth
